I’m not exactly a big fan of the Disney channel, or any of its dumbed-down programs (I’d much rather see kids read a book than watch that drivel day in and day out). Furthermore, I have no idea what tweens these days find appealing in Miley Cyrus’s show Hannah Montana. Yet, as annoying as I find Miley Cyrus, I’m disturbed by Jamie Foxx’s recent comments about the young actress/singer/Disney poster-child.

If you didn’t hear about his remarks, watch the video below, or read some excerpts:

“Foxx is heard saying: “Who is Miley Cyrus? The one with all the gums? She need to get a gum transplant!”
He also says: “Make a sex tape and grow up!”
A woman is heard calling Cyrus the b-word.”

Alright, this crosses several lines. First of all, why the hell is Foxx making fun of a teenage girl’s looks? Isn’t it enough that she is constantly subjected to public scrutiny due to her profession? We all know the pressure female stars undergo to maintain their “classic” good looks. What is most appalling, however, are the comments about making a sex tape, the implications of incest, and the fact that they tell her to get STD’s. I’d like to say I have a pretty raunchy and caustic sense of humor, but that shit isn’t funny or witty. It’s pretty moronic, and needlessly hurtful.

Did anyone notice that it wasn’t just a bunch of Foxx’s male colleagues “joking” around, but that there was actually a female (or several) trashing Miley Cyrus as well? The first thought that popped into my head was “Patriarchy Whore.” There was something peculiarly vindictive about the way this woman insults Miley Cyrus. She calls her “the little white bitch,” and tells her “go make a sex tape…with your daddy.” In my opinion that last comment was the worst out of the entire tape. Why would this woman feel compelled to say such things about a 16 year old girl?

Jamie Foxx later apologized on Jay Leno (here is an excerpt):

“Did you say something inappropriate?” Jay Leno innocently queried.
“Yeah,” Foxx admitted, taking a few breaths before launching into a full-blown apology. “I so apologize to [Cyrus], and this is sincere,” he began.
“I am a comedian, and you guys know that whatever I say, I don’t mean any of it. [Big laugh from the audience]. And sometimes, as comedians, as we do, we go a little bit too far.
“I have a radio show…We’re really the black Howard Stern. We go at everybody. There was a situation with Miley Cyrus, and I just want to say, I apologize for what I said. I didn’t mean it maliciously. You know I’m a comedian. You know my heart,” he added, turning to Leno.
Then, looking at the camera, “Miley, I apologize, so I’ll call you. I got a daughter too, so I completely understand.”

Hmm. While Foxx compares his radio show “The Foxxhole” to Howard Stern’s show, I’d have to disagree. Howard Stern, no matter what you think of him, is notorious for his overtly sexual banter and coverage of taboo topics. Being a sexist and racist prick doesn’t make you the “black Howard Stern,” Jamie. Just thought you should know. Furthermore, if these are the sort of antics you have to pull to get any attention, maybe you should just stick to acting (seriously, had anyone heard of his radio show BEFORE this mini-scandal?). Let’s just say I’ll be skipping Jamie Foxx’s future endeavors. If you must see “The Soloist”, I’d recommend pirating the damn thing. Sorry if that’s going too far. Sometimes, as a blogger, I know I go too far. I don’t mean to be malicious, Jamie. I’m just a blogger. You know my heart, man.

Thanks to Pop on the Pop for bringing Foxx’s comments to my attention. It’s the only gossip blog I read and I recommend checking out her stuff.

If you haven’t heard about the Rihanna and Chris Brown domestic violence controversy you might be living under a rock. While I don’t personally follow celebrity gossip, the media has made it nearly impossible to ignore this scandal. It’s all over television and of course, the internet. Blogs of all sorts have weighed in on the drama – gossip blogs have followed the rumors, while feminist blogs like Shakesville have discussed the treatment of Rihanna by the media.

Recently, pictures of Rihanna after being abused by Chris Brown have been circulated on the internet. My heart goes out to Rihanna, because not only is this a violation of her privacy, but people from all walks of life are judging her life and her decisions. However, what is even more shocking (yes, it gets worse) are the comments on the blogs that have posted the picture of Rihanna’s bruises. Here is a sampling of the comments I’ve seen on several gossip blogs.

(The following comments were originally posted here).

“LOl never thought she was hot anyways now she looks like a monster, I’m pretty sure no one would have known if it wasn’t someoneelse who called the police. she would have kept it a secret” – Sora

“well done son, gave her a propoer ass whoopin, silly girl deserved it…..i love chris brown forever!! blup blup blup !” – woman basher 4 life

“i think that this pic looks far worse than it realli was. i mean whose 2 sey that chris brown actually did all this 2 her. females lie jus like niggaz. & if she’s as grimy as i heard, then this isnt probably all chris’s work! & yess im standin up 4 chris becuz im a loyal fan & neither one of us know the real story. so everyone needs 2 chill cuz we dont know FACTSS!!” – quiauna

“bwahahaha…SHE DESERVES IT!!!!!!!!!!!” – Jerry & Joes

“Holla at cha boy Chris… he let a HO KNOW! Slapped her so hard it sent her brain back to Trinidad!
No one is above an ass whooping! Anyone acts up they will get BEAT DOWN!
Holla!” – KimchiGUN

“Chris Brown is a SISSY…
If I was 6 foot and 160lbs of lean muscle, I would have broke a bitches nose!” – KimchiGUN (again)

There are hundreds more comments like this on that blog and others. There were some supportive comments (like this one: “I don’t like looking at this picture…It’s quite exploitative. Rihanna’s emotional and physical bruises are a private matter. I realize there’s no way to prevent media coverage on this, but I do think there should be limits as to how far it delves into very personal situations. Does anyone else agree with me on this?” – Lauren Davis) but overall, I find the misogyny in these comments appalling! This kind of attitude towards domestic violence is troubling; it is a serious issue that should not be taken lightly. I don’t really have words to express how I feel about this, just a mixture of anger, sadness, and disgust.

What are your thoughts?

Warning: some pictures NSFW

Renee at Womanist Musings has posted on several occasions about PETA’s less-than-savory behavior. Not only do they have a girl-on-girl make-out tour (to bring attention to the fact that meat can decrease a man’s virility?) but they’ve had PETA demonstrators dress up as members of the Ku Klux Klan to make some inane point about cruelty towards animals. This stuff makes throwing flour on Lindsay Lohan look innocent fun.

What’s the point of exploiting human beings for the sake of animal rights? Okay, so animals deserve to be treated nicely & fairly, I couldn’t argue with that. However, I don’t really see the point of furthering oppression against women and black people just to raise awareness for your cause, no matter how respectable that cause is. Many supporters of PETA claim that this is an effective way of getting publicity and media attention. They overlook the fact that many causes have had very successful ad campaigns that do not exploit or harm other people. For example, the truth campaign targets the cigarette industry with inventive television and magazine advertisements. Why can’t PETA take a page from their book and find similar ways of getting attention?

I googled some of PETA’s ad campaigns, and what I found was disturbing. I didn’t really realize the extent to which they’ve consistently used sexism in their ads:

The only ads with men in them depicted men only from the chest-up, exploited homosexual couples, or pictured Steve-O from the Wildboyz (who, it could be argued, would go naked for just about any reason).

No, don’t worry, I’m actually pretty pleased with my rack. However, it’s no secret that other women are unhappy with their appearance and will go to questionable lengths to achieve happiness. I don’t have too much of a problem with individual women going under the knife in pursuit of perfection – it is their choice after all. But what if there was a site that allowed women to create profiles asking men for money towards their breast augmentation surgery?

The site exists and it’s called My Free Implants. Basically, the deal is this: women can create free profiles and are selected to receive a free boob job. Men visiting the site can choose to donate money towards this surgery. However, the way in which they do so is primarily through “buying” access to these women. Here’s what the site says:

“As a member of the MyFreeImplants website you have direct access to contact the many girls that are seeking help in achieving the physical appearance that they have long desired.

Once you create your account you can choose to buy message credits in several denominations. When you use your credits to send messages to the ladies they earn credit towards their procedures. …In addition, you have the option to signup for a monthly membership that gives you 5 message credits per month along with unrestricted access to over 1000 ladies profiles.
In addition to the unrestricted access to all of the female profiles you can also help the ladies by:

•	Sending a direct donation to her for her procedure
•	Purchase message credits that allow you to send messages to the ladies
•	Request personal custom videos from the ladies
•	Receive custom photos of your favorite girls (you may even request specific outfits*)
•	Chat 1-on-1 online in real time while getting to know the ladies
•	and more…” (emphasis added)

I shouldn’t have to point out how fucked up this sounds. The terminology “unrestricted access” evokes the image of men buying women, or receiving favors in exchange for money (like “sexy pictures” as the site terms it). The site does not require that the women give these “sexy pictures” to the men who donate to their “cause” but many do choose to post half-naked before and after images on their profile (link NSFW).

If that isn’t bad enough, the front page of the site proclaims: “Gents – Help the girl of YOUR dreams, get the body of her dreams. Develop a connection with a girl of your choice and help her earn Free Breast Implants!” So not only do men get to be the “benefactors” of these women, but they are making them into perfect little Barbie dolls & objectifying them as part of a fantasy. Sounds like fun, sign me up!

Even though I don’t have a problem with plastic surgery as a choice (it’s not for me, but who am I to judge?), I do have a problem with the impossible standards of beauty as dictated by society, the media, and oh yeah, our patriarchal culture. If a woman is choosing breast augmentation for her own reasons, that’s fine. Yet, the line between the “right” and “wrong” reasons to undergo plastic surgery are very blurry and hard to define. A woman may say she is doing this for herself, but she could very well be doing to please her husband, or make more tips working at Hooters (as one girl did on MTV’s True Life). Again, I can’t judge what is a good or a bad reason, I can only comment on the fact that plastic surgery patients are mostly women. That wouldn’t have anything to do with the sexual objectification of women in the media, would it? Nahh…couldn’t be.

So, my problem with this site goes beyond the fact that I find it to be distasteful and sexist. What really gets to me is that there are so many more charitable causes out there! Try Kiva.com, where you can lend money to third world entrepreneurs. Donate to Greenpeace. Save the environment. Why on earth would people donate money to women so they can get invasive surgery that could harm them, reduce their abilities to breastfeed their children, and feed into society’s obsession with unrealistic standards of beauty? Not to mention the fact that there are probably tons of other negative effects, like toxics released into the environment during the production of silicone breast implants, and doctors pressuring women to get more plastic surgery in order to make a buck (or several).

For any readers considering breast implant surgery, I would highly recommend paying for them yourself or, if you can’t afford it, reconsider whether it’s worth the expensive price tag. Just don’t buy into this Free Breast Implant bullshit. Getting bigger boobs is one thing, but compromising your integrity is another.

- Dollface

P.S. Check out the “idea” behind the genius of My Free Implants:

“MyFreeImplants.com started in early 2005 when a bunch of friends were attending a bachelor party in Las Vegas. During the course of the party a conversation started up about how one of the ladies had the most perfect set of breasts. She told us how she had just recently “gotten them done.” Her beautiful friend chimed in and mentioned that she wanted to get hers done but could not yet afford the $6000 price tag that her friend had just paid. One of us yelled out “I got $5 on it” and then someone else offered $10, and then $20, and then $50. By the time we got around the suite there was a verbal commitment amongst all the guys in the room to pay for 25% of her implants!
With that initial brain storm and proof of concept we set out to actually raise the rest of the money needed for a full procedure. We came up with the name MyFreeImplants.com and put together a quick website and started spreading the word online. It was an instant hit and donations from all over the world starting pouring in. Within 4 months the remainder of the money was raised with a little extra left over to pay for the website costs.”

Quite the Hallmark story, isn’t it?

The Presidential Election is over, John McCain lost. Let the in-party fighting and slander begin. In the recent days we’ve seen previously undisclosed “tidbits” about Sarah Palin come to light. Some are important, like the fact that she discussed Bill Ayers before the campaign OK’d it. Others, like the fact that she “greeted McCain advisors in a towel” and spent more money on clothing than previously realized, seem a little superfluous. Okay, so the woman has no modesty and has a clothing addiction, so what?

This information is obviously being released in part to protect McCain’s image (he is, after all, still a United States Senator) and to distance the Republican party from Sarah Palin’s questionable political presence. However, for someone considering to run for President in 2012 (or so the MSM would tell us), these juicy kernels of information are potentially devastating.

I want to consider, however, what is truth and what is hearsay. Although I personally would like to ensure that Palin’s political career is shortlived, I feel that part of the negative discourse surrounding her has to do with the fact that she is female.

Let’s look at what the MSM and former McCain aides are accusing her of:

- greeting McCain aides in a towel (if she were a man, would it matter?)

- going on a shopping spree and asking aides to use their personal credit cards for her purchases (because you know how much women love shopping)

- throwing temper tantrums over bad news clippings (note the language here – temper tantrums. She is a grown woman, after all. Must we equate her with behavior fitting a toddler?)

- she doesn’t know that Africa is a continent (because she’s a total ditz from Alaska, of course)

Seriously, even if these are all true, who cares? She has given the public enough reason to mistrust her abilities as a politician (her botched interviews and her involvement in Troopergate, for example). We don’t need a laundry list of all her inadequacies and quirks. At best, this trivial and sensationalist journalism (“Oh my goodness, Sarah was only wearing a towel!?”) is distracting from important issues, yet again. I guess we can expect the google hits for “Sarah Palin in a towel” to spike dramatically by 500% in the next few days. You know, because that’s what really matters to Americans.

So while I am mostly happy that this will be (I hope) the last post I write about the Alaskan Governor, I must say, let’s give the woman a break and let her go back to Alaska in peace. Her political career is in shambles and I don’t think discussing her temper tantrums on national television is necessary at this point. It’s a little childish, don’t you think?

Sexual harassment may not be as rampant as it seems in television shows like Mad Men, but it is still prevalent in many of today’s workplaces. However, as sexism itself becomes more aversive (in other words, subtle and less overt, yet insidiously present), sexual harassment may be harder to identify and combat.

Before the 1970’s, sexual harassment was often seen as “acceptable behavior.” However, as more women entered the workforce in many different kinds of occupations, sexual harassment became more of a problem – a problem that many women didn’t want to put up with anymore. There was, at the time, no legal definition of sexual harassment. However, several Supreme Court cases later, the EEOA (Equal Employment Opportunity Act) put forth some guidelines in order to identify sexual harassment.

Under these guidelines there are two major forms of sexual harassment:

1. Quid Pro Quo – This Latin term literally means “something for something”. Under Quid Pro Quo, sexual harassment occurs when an employee (of any gender) must put up with sexual advances to protect or maintain their a) job b) promotion c) wage increase d) favorable performance evaluation.

2. Hostile Environment – Sometimes there isn’t a clear “exchange” of sexual favors for job security or promotion. That doesn’t mean that sexual harassment isn’t occurring. If a sexually demeaning and hostile work environment is created, that is also sexual harassment. Methods of creating a sexually demeaning work environment include repeated sexual comments, jokes, posters of nude women (or men), innuendo, and cat calls/shouting. Systematic sexual comments are discriminatory and create a hostile environment for workers.

Thanks to 1986 court case Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson, companies are now held more accountable for the sexual harassment that may occur among their workers. However, while companies can be held responsible, in many cases it is up to the individual to report sexual harassment.

The best steps to take to report sexual harassment are to tell your immediate supervisor and Human Resources (HR). In the case that the sexual harassment is perpetrated by your boss, go to their superior or straight to HR. If you are discouraged by your boss or HR to file a complaint, keep in mind that you have the right to file such a complaint and the corporation can be taken to court for refusing to address the situation. Furthermore, it is very effective to notify the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission), which is a commission that deals with workplace discrimination and harassment.

According to a recent study at the University of Melbourne, “people employed in casual and contract work are up to ten times more likely to suffer unwanted sexual advances than those in full time permanent positions”. This shows that not only is sexual harassment still a problem, but that workers who are not, perhaps, as “valuable” to a company due to their temporary status are even more vulnerable to sexual harassment. This is probably due to the fact that the consequences of sexually harassing a casual worker seem less dire since they will not be working there for long. However, workers of both temporary and permanent status must remember that they have the right of a hostile-free working environment.
