–>Newsflash: Happy people watch less TV than unhappy people. Read the whole article here, and then turn off your television!

–>Winter is already here in many parts of the U.S, brrr! Here are some awesome blog posts on how to stay stylish in the winter months and how to beat the winter blues.

–>Read this eye-opening post about Sarah Palin’s so-called “gender equal” state of Alaska. Did you know that Alaska’s rape rate is 2.5 times the national average? Apparently, neither does Sarah.

–>President Bush is putting his finals days on the job to good (or bad) use. Check out this article on the “midnight regulations” Bush has been passing lately. Makes me rather nervous, considering a lot of what gets passed can’t be overturned by Obama’s administration.

Check out this excerpt:

“The Wall Street Journal reports that the new rules, “open the way for commercial development of oil shale on federal land, allow truckers to drive for longer periods, and add certain restrictions on employee time off under the Family and Medical Leave Act.”

Fuck you Bush. Seriously.

–>Some think it’s time for the Republican Party to divorce itself from its more religious membership. What do you think? Read the original article and the commentary here.

Hope your weekend has been lovely! Happy Thanksgiving to those in the United States!

Did Homosexuals Cause the Fall of Rome?

by Harlequin

Okay, so I know everyone is upset about the passage of Proposition 8 in California.  I agree that it is total bullshit, and I can only hope that the Supreme Court backs up gay rights on this one.

On a related note, check out this clip of the Ellen Degeneres show in which she responds to absolutely ridiculous claims made by Oklahoma state representative Sally Kern.  I know this happened awhile ago but it has just recently exploded in the media given the blatantly oppressive situation out in California. The views expressed in the clip are simultaneously hilariously laughable but also kind of frightening…it is hard for me to realize that some people actually believe theories like this.

Now, can anyone come up with an example of a society that has collapsed because of the acceptance of gay communities?  I mean, really, let’s just talk about the Roman Empire – they did have those damn bath houses…

sallykernauntieP.S.  Sally Kern has refused to apologize for her statements, claiming that she said “nothing that was not true.”  And not everyone is outraged either; she received a standing ovation from Republican legislators shortly after.  Apparently a lot of people believe that the gay community is simply a bastion of evil that will destroy the world, so much so that even people who fulfill positions of authority in the political world can go around running their mouths like this.  Let’s not forget Sally, that is was not so long ago that women were seen as evil and destructive simply by existing – you probably would have been burned at the stake for making any statement at all.  If you want to talk about indoctrination, perhaps you should look towards your own state and the policies you help pass there.  She actually attempted to remove books that supported gays and lesbians from public libraries!  So now we are getting to decide not only who can get married and to whom, but what books we can read?  Come on Sally, that ain’t America, “the home of the free.”

Breaking News Alert: Palin Greets McCain Aide in Towel

by Kelly

palinblue3

The Presidential Election is over, John McCain lost. Let the in-party fighting and slander begin. In the recent days we’ve seen previously undisclosed “tidbits” about Sarah Palin come to light. Some are important, like the fact that she discussed Bill Ayers before the campaign OK’d it. Others, like the fact that she “greeted McCain advisors in a towel” and spent more money on clothing than previously realized, seem a little superfluous. Okay, so the woman has no modesty and has a clothing addiction, so what?

This information is obviously being released in part to protect McCain’s image (he is, after all, still a United States Senator) and to distance the Republican party from Sarah Palin’s questionable political presence. However, for someone considering to run for President in 2012 (or so the MSM would tell us), these juicy kernels of information are potentially devastating.

I want to consider, however, what is truth and what is hearsay. Although I personally would like to ensure that Palin’s political career is shortlived, I feel that part of the negative discourse surrounding her has to do with the fact that she is female.

Let’s look at what the MSM and former McCain aides are accusing her of:

- greeting McCain aides in a towel (if she were a man, would it matter?)

- going on a shopping spree and asking aides to use their personal credit cards for her purchases (because you know how much women love shopping)

- throwing temper tantrums over bad news clippings (note the language here – temper tantrums. She is a grown woman, after all. Must we equate her with behavior fitting a toddler?)

- she doesn’t know that Africa is a continent (because she’s a total ditz from Alaska, of course)

Seriously, even if these are all true, who cares? She has given the public enough reason to mistrust her abilities as a politician (her botched interviews and her involvement in Troopergate, for example). We don’t need a laundry list of all her inadequacies and quirks. At best, this trivial and sensationalist journalism (“Oh my goodness, Sarah was only wearing a towel!?”) is distracting from important issues, yet again. I guess we can expect the google hits for “Sarah Palin in a towel” to spike dramatically by 500% in the next few days. You know, because that’s what really matters to Americans.

So while I am mostly happy that this will be (I hope) the last post I write about the Alaskan Governor, I must say, let’s give the woman a break and let her go back to Alaska in peace. Her political career is in shambles and I don’t think discussing her temper tantrums on national television is necessary at this point. It’s a little childish, don’t you think?

-> Sarah Palin has done it again – she never ceases to be in the center of a not-so-flattering spotlight.  Apparently she received a prank phone call from a radio personality posing as the French President.  Below is a clip of the 6-minute phone interview.

–> I love Joe Biden – if for anything, simply for the fact that he can be so deadpan with his responses.  This interview has been all over the place, but if you haven’t seen it, watch Joe own this reporter.

–> So is voting for McCain anyways?  Apparently the GOP is struggling to understand the demise of their party.  And after the disaster of the McCain/Palin ticket, they are fighting to keep a foot in the door of the White House.

–> Sick of hearing about the Bradley effect?  Well read this article about white Americans who are really voting for Obama.

–> Here is a relatively short video piece by Time Magazine’s Joe Klein on his interview with Barack Obama. This is not only thought-provoking but really worth viewing. Watch the 3 minute video here.

–> As Dollface recently mentioned, an awesome blog that’s developed during this Presidential election is Yes We Can (Hold Babies). It’s a series of photographs of Obama with children or babies (and sometimes Michelle or Biden). Seriously, each picture on this site is cuter than the last. Highly recommended.

–>Hope you all had a great weekend – and please…

DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!!!

yours

Marx Gets the Last Laugh: Is Capitalism Failing?

by Kelly

The past week has been a rough one for the U.S. economy. Several major investment banks went bankrupt and some companies, such as AIG, got bailed out by the government to the tune of 85 billion dollars. (It shouldn’t have to be said that the taxpayers are paying for this). In addition, the government has nationalized major mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Now, I’m not a Marxist, but this is sounding awfully familiar. In my economics and government classes, I’ve read excerpts of Das Kapital and The Communist Manifesto. One of Marx’s most basic theories is his notion that history has progressed through several stages of class struggle: from feudalism to capitalism, to the eventual failure of capitalism. He claimed that our world would end up with socialism and that this would mark the end of history (since we’d have perfected our society). Now, I’m not really so sure socialism is the answer. However, the past few days have exemplified what Marx warns in his works: capitalism is failing.

Marx believed that capitalism was inherently flawed, so much so that it would lead to its own destruction. He explained this by claiming capitalism operates through a pattern of business cycles. These business cycles are exhibited by relative prosperity for a period of time, then a decline and recession – in other words, boom and bust. Marx maintained that each business cycle would be more and more devastating, until finally culminating in one disastrous collapse. This would then leave the world (or individual countries) ready for socialism as a replacement of the failed capitalistic system. With the recent failure of major investment banks, and the warnings from some modern economists that FDIC-protected banks and other companies/institutions are going to fail next, it appears that Marx might have the last laugh.

Business Cycle

Business Cycle

We cannot afford to let our current recession turn into another depression. We must, as a country, find a way to overcome this financial crisis. And while I’m not saying we should throw in our hats and purchase Communist Manifestos for our school children, I think elements of socialism would be a beneficial addition to our economic practices. Even now we are not a perfectly capitalistic society: our markets are not free from government regulation and intervention. Adam Smith’s invisible hand has left the building, so to speak.

I argue that we should model our economy after those of Sweden, Denmark, and other European countries. These countries have a social democracy, in the sense that they democratically reform their economy so that there is more of a “welfare state,” or benefits provided by the government. Sure, citizens of these countries may pay more taxes, but they have the assurance that their taxes are being distributed more meaningfully and appropriately than Americans do. (Also, for everyone who hears “welfare state” and immediately has negative connotations, keep in mind that many of the stereotypes about welfare programs are unfounded).

So, while I run the risk of sounding like a radical leftist, I’m also just your average citizen, concerned with the uncertain state of our country’s future. I hope that if Obama is the next President, we can see some positive reforms on our economy, though I don’t expect him to single-handedly fix our economic and political institutions. I will say this: if McCain is elected, we are in for 4 to 8 years of the Republican party attempting to prevent the failure of capitalism by any means necessary – no matter how detrimental to our society. If that terrible nightmare becomes a reality, I’ll be the first to apply for a visa to Sweden.
