–> Professor What If? had a recent guest post entitled “What if the feminist blogosphere is a form of digital colonialism?” and I think it’s definitely a must-read!

Here’s an excerpt:

Hierarchy is easy to spot when the perpetrators of systems of privilege are obvious ones. The virtual world, more often than not, simply replicates the “real” one, often with the same results of marginalization and exploitation. As is also the case in the real world, those who live on the margins grow quickly tired of cyberspace agendas that seem to dictate the future of the net, particularly when those agendas of privilege are cloaked[2] in the web’s potential for egalitarianism.

–> In these troubled economic times, many of us have had to cut corners. However, the affluent are actually enjoying the “exclusivity” of wealth and luxury.

“What you’re seeing is a shift to real elitism,” says Russ Alan Prince, the president of Prince Assoc. “The rich like it better that everybody can’t be part of the luxury boom anymore.”

Personally I find this kind of elitism to be distasteful. Instead of giving more to charity, it appears that some of the most rich and powerful are more concerned with lording it over the rest of us. Read the full article here.

–> Racialicious has a pertinent article about…wait for it: Michelle Obama’s ass. Or rather, why the media should be focusing on Michelle’s more important attributes (like, her achievements? her brain?). The post also briefly discusses the history of attitudes towards women of color & their appearance, with emphasis on the sexual appeal of the derriere.

–> I stumbled upon a new blog I enjoy, entitled Mom Grind. Check out two of her articles: “I Read a Vogue Article and Now my Brain Hurts” and “20 Ways to Help Your Child Develop a Positive Self Image“. I’m not a parent at the moment but the article is useful and enlightening nonetheless.

–> Dolly recently posted about whether men can be called feminists. Some interesting related articles are “Why Men Should Care About Gender Stereotypes” from The F Word and “Boys Needed” at Splice Today, which is an article about why we need male voices in feminism. Thought-provoking reads for all genders!

–> A guide to holding a Pro-choice counter-protest at a local clinic that provides abortion services. Got this link at The Coat Hanger Project.

–> An eye-opening account of one’s journalists trip on to the Ukraine in search of a mail-order bride. He went with a group of men who paid for a guide to take them around to “socials” where they interact with hundreds of young women who may be interested in getting engaged to an American man (in exchange for wealth, etc). I found the article fascinating.

And The Crown Goes To…

I am sure there are a trillion posts about John McCain’s pick for VP. But come on, Sarah Palin is just a goldmine for words; I am excited just thinking about the state of our nation’s politics today – black guys with afros, beauty queens, and body builders! The world is a crazy place, and this election perfectly exemplifies the changing nature of our society. I don’t know much about her, but from what I have been reading there is only one thing in my mind: confusion.

Ok McCain, we know Barack Obama had to pick an old white guy to hedge his bets. Apparently you had to hedge yours by choosing a woman – one who is certainly not bad to look at, given her status as a beauty pageant contestant. She looks like a former model dressed up in executive clothes, but much less of a tight-ass than your wife Cindy McCain.

I am frustrated. Frustrated because I would love to hear a woman’s voice in the presidency, but really more frustrated because this is apparently the kind of woman we need to start off with. I admire her tenacity and her success, but then I read about her background and her stance on certain issues and I just want to send her back to Alaska. She may be a financial whiz, but then you look at her opinions on social issues. She was obviously picked because she is a woman who shares many of McCain’s viewpoints. She is a woman who is against abortion, a friend of gay people who is against gay marriage, and a mother of an 18-year-old son in the military who spends her spare time shooting rifles. McCain says she is perfect for the job, but he puts a big hole through his inexperience angle. If Obama is inexperienced, then what the hell would you call Miss Congeniality? She ain’t no Hillary, but sadly she may just have the right genitals to sway a few female voters.

When you hear the word “feminism,” inevitably images of bra-burning female radicals with unshaved armpits come to mind. And as funny as those images might be, they really don’t do much for feminism as a movement or academic study. In reality, men and women alike can be a part of feminism. Even if you don’t personally identify with the term “feminist,” many of us can sympathize with the issues concerning women today. That’s where this blog comes in. As two college-aged students, Harlequin and I hope to examine the world around us through the lens of our own brand of feminism.

Sure, you might argue that feminism has run its course, and women have gained so many rights since the “First wave” (think Susan B. Anthony and the suffrage movement) and “Second wave” of feminism (60’s & 70’s women’s rights movement). However, Harlequin and I agree that there is still so much more for women and men to discuss. In a world where there is still a wage gap between genders and the United States does not offer paid maternal leave (or paternal leave!), perhaps it is time for the next movement. So welcome to Rotten Little Girls, where we are trying to kick-start a new kind of revolution. Hope you enjoy reading what we have to say, and feel free to e-mail & comment our posts with your own thoughts and opinions. Constructive commentary is what we aim for, so if you have hateful things to say, please think twice before writing.
