President Obama Signs Fair Pay Act

by Kelly

obamapayact

I don’t know about you, but when I heard about this tonight I couldn’t help but smile! Finally, we have legislation concerning the wage gap (Hey MRAs, even our President knows it exists!). Here’s an excerpt from the NY Times article:

“It is fitting that with the very first bill I sign — the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act — we are upholding one of this nation’s first principles: that we are all created equal and each deserve a chance to pursue our own version of happiness,” the president said.

He said was signing the bill not only in honor of Ms. Ledbetter — who stood behind him, shaking her head and clasping her hands in seeming disbelief — but in honor of his own grandmother, “who worked in a bank all her life, and even after she hit that glass ceiling, kept getting up again” and for his daughters, “because I want them to grow up in a nation that values their contributions, where there are no limits to their dreams.”

President Barack Obama

by Kelly

I thought his speech was great, click here for a full transcript. What were your thoughts?

P.S. For those who noticed the confusion over the oath, it was not Obama who forgot the lines, but rather Chief Justice Roberts who recited it incorrectly. Obama caught this and waited for the proper phrase. At least that’s what I’ve read (I’m sure there will be more articles about it in the next couple of hours).

Please share your thoughts on this historic moment & hopes (and fears!) for the Obama administration. Full posting on RLG will resume soon, I’m in the middle of the start of classes so bear with me :)

Looks like everyone is counting down the minutes until Obama’s inauguration…

–>The Atlantic Monthly has a compelling article entitled “Should Women Rule?“. The piece discusses the book Why Women Should Rule the World by former White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers. Whether or not you agree with her conclusions, it’s an interesting read.

–>Sarah Palin’s Fox News interview. Features Todd Palin’s “snowmachine” and the Governor cooking with a dress suit on! One word: awesome.

–>Idaho students chant “assassinate Obama!” on a school bus. Highly, highly disturbing to me. Does it make it better or worse that many of the children didn’t know what “assassinate” even meant? This takes brainwashing to another level…

–>Obama plans to address nation in weekly Youtube address. Rock on!

Hope you all had a great weekend!

November 4th, 2008: Election Day

by Kelly

It’s finally election day! If you haven’t voted already, get out there and vote for your candidate.

Now, if you’ve been following our coverage of the election, it’s pretty obvious what we think of the Presidential candidates. However, I would like to offer our official endorsement of Barack Obama. Over this election Obama has proven himself to be a thoughtful, articulate, and steady candidate. His intelligence and capability has shown in his speeches, the way he has run his campaign and his pick of a Vice Presidential candidate.

While the polls are in Obama’s favor, don’t let that stop you from voting. Even if you aren’t in a swing state, your vote counts. There is a nervous sentiment in the air that people will rely on the positive polls figures as a sign that Obama’s win is a “sure thing.” However, as we’ve seen in the past, it ain’t over ‘til it’s over. All Obama supporters should vote, not just to be a part of this historic election, but to ensure that the right man is elected as President. We must be vigilant that shady polling practices and the Bradley effect do not take their toll on this election.

Both Harlequin and I have already cast our votes for Barack Obama. We wish him the best of luck today. For us, and many of our peers, this has been a truly historic and exciting first Presidential election.

-> Sarah Palin has done it again – she never ceases to be in the center of a not-so-flattering spotlight.  Apparently she received a prank phone call from a radio personality posing as the French President.  Below is a clip of the 6-minute phone interview.

–> I love Joe Biden – if for anything, simply for the fact that he can be so deadpan with his responses.  This interview has been all over the place, but if you haven’t seen it, watch Joe own this reporter.

–> So is voting for McCain anyways?  Apparently the GOP is struggling to understand the demise of their party.  And after the disaster of the McCain/Palin ticket, they are fighting to keep a foot in the door of the White House.

–> Sick of hearing about the Bradley effect?  Well read this article about white Americans who are really voting for Obama.

–> Here is a relatively short video piece by Time Magazine’s Joe Klein on his interview with Barack Obama. This is not only thought-provoking but really worth viewing. Watch the 3 minute video here.

–> As Dollface recently mentioned, an awesome blog that’s developed during this Presidential election is Yes We Can (Hold Babies). It’s a series of photographs of Obama with children or babies (and sometimes Michelle or Biden). Seriously, each picture on this site is cuter than the last. Highly recommended.

–>Hope you all had a great weekend – and please…

DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!!!

The 2008 Presidential Election in Pictures

by Kelly

I want to reflect for a moment on this historic Presidential campaign. Instead of commenting, I will just post some pictures that speak to me.

Special thanks to Evil Slutopia, Shakesville, Donklephant, and Yes We Can (Hold Babies) for many of these photographs.

If you’re curious my opinion on John McCain and Sarah Palin…

Do you have any favorite moments of the election? Last minute thoughts on your favorite candidate? Please share.

I’ve got some hilarious videos to share with you all today.

Here is a 2000 ad for Budweiser (I’m linking to this to give the next advertisement context):

Here is the 2008 ad endorsing Obama by the same guys:

–> Did you hear about the woman who was supposedly attacked by an Obama supporter? Turns out it’s a hoax. Read more here.

–> The Evil Slut Clique has posted 50 reasons not to vote for John McCain…according to John McCain himself. Read it here, it’s awesome.

In other news, I voted Obama via absentee ballot the other day! Hope you’re all having a great weekend.

In a major coup for the Obama campaign, Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama as his candidate for President. Check out his reasoning in this video clip (I really recommend it, he is well-spoken and brings up a lot of good points):

We’ll have to see how this affects the campaign in its final days, as it is being heralded as Obama’s “October Surprise.” Though some say that this will only give Obama a minor boost in ratings, it is making quite a splash in the media.

–> Check out this post on Racialicious entitled, “An Open Letter to White Voters, Or What McCain Really Thinks of You”. The post challenges some of the negative attitudes coming from the McCain campaign and the stereotypes being made about the “typical white voter” (are we really all just xenophobic assholes who drink six-packs every day with our hockey-mom wives?). I urge you all to check this out.

–> A really cute video about President Clinton’s final days in office. I think it’s been around for a while but I hadn’t seen it until recently. It’s pretty hilarious (and I know Harlequin will die when she sees it — she has a bit of a crush on Bill).

Hope you all had a great weekend! I still haven’t received my absentee ballot and I’m getting nervous! They better send it to me sooooon. (Maybe that’s why all these links have been political…I can’t get the election out of my head!)
