Hey, all of you guys enjoying the global heat wave? Yeahhh not so much here…
Of course, the best thing to do in weather like this is run (do not walk) to the nearest beach & plop yourself down near the ocean breeze and crack open a good book.
I’ve been vacationing the past two days in Cape Cod with my extended family. At a jaunt to the beach, I found myself people watching. I noticed something — people are beautiful. Okay, so, if you read this blog pretty regularly you know I’m not one for flowery statements and trite bullcrap. However, this is the damn truth: people are beautiful, universally, and it would be rad if society & the media could reflect that.
I saw an older couple chilling out next to each other, each sitting on faded beach chairs with tiny headphones plugged into their ears. While holding hands. No, they weren’t “fit” or even classically attractive, but does it matter?
I also saw a bunch of teenaged girls walking along the shoreline, laughing at each other’s jokes. They were wearing these FIERRRRCE cut-out one-pieces that I’ve been admiring in all the Urban Outfitters catalogues I keep getting in the mail, but, ladies and gents, these were not twig-like models — these were girls of all shapes and sizes and curves and lines and…well, they looked phenomenal. I was immediately envious of their confidence & decided then and there that I would invest in an edgy bathing suit. Love handles be damned.
And then, the preening 20-something peacocks, throwing their football around, muscles rippling & beer guts jiggling and all the while holding a Coors Light in one hand. Not to mention the jolly guy blasting his boombox underneath a rainbow umbrella. And the toddlers discovering the ocean, their mothers and fathers watching on.
It’s just nice seeing people at play, enjoying the sunshine and the sand and the gorgeous warm water without worrying about covering up their bellies and their thighs and their cellulite (oh my!). So forget that myth that you need to get your body bathing suit-ready, because it’s ready now. Go enjoy yourself.
