Newsflash: The Media (Still) Sucks
by Kelly
It’s been over a month since Michael Jackson’s death – and his pasty face is still plastered over the front page of CNN and other reputable news sources. The latest in MJ’s posthumous career? His hair (from 1984, no less!) will be turned into diamonds.
What’s next? Has someone captured Michael Jackson’s last fart in a glass jar? Should I be checking e-bay for his old nose?
It’s been several weeks since fellow political blogger, Polarimetric, wrote a great article explaining all the reasons the media frenzy after MJ’s death has been problematic and excessive. So why are we still harping on this crap?
Guess what, folks. His doctor didn’t kill him. He was a wealthy, troubled celebrity who had the money and influence to acquire enough sedatives to knock out an elephant. Let’s bury the damn guy and illegally download his albums online as a final toast to his illustrious career. Maybe it’s just because I grew up during MJ’s “weird” years and have never liked pop or hip hop music outside of a dance club, but I’m fed up with the Michael Jackson coverage. Rest in peace, Michael. I mean it. Peace and glorious silence.
So how about we discuss something a little more…meaningful? Pertinent?
How about the Erin Andrews video (here’s an opinion piece that isn’t offensive to Andrews or women in general). Or, we could talk about Sotomayor. How about Professor Gates? Ongoing racism in America? What about the rest of the world? Remember that country called Iran? Hmmm, me neither.

It’s hard being a NO BODY? You would not feel this way if it were someone you liked a little – now would you? Try to be fair and instead of jealous. Then again, what if he was white?
Oh dear god… I couldn’t even believe the hair thing until I actually clicked the link. I think my hope for the future of humanity was just chopped in half. Then again, I find myself saying that so frequently nowadays that I don’t know how much hope is left.
It’s disgusting. These people in the media and whoever is writing/planning/whatever the stories that go on TV and in newspapers need to realize their responsibility. They are, for some, the primary source of news — it’s not just the issue that they’re excessively reporting on Michael Jackson; as you mentioned, it’s at the expense of other much more important issues.
All that should matter to anyone before and after Bushitler is finally arrested and tried for war crimes is global warming, and America’s dirty hand in it.
Watch Bill Maher and support Obama.
@ sickchick — I would feel the same way no matter his race, talent, etc. I liked Heath Ledger but I didn’t cry when he died. My grandmother died last year and I did cry…but I didn’t need her death splashed across the media for a month to get over her death.
@ polarimetric — I have thiiiis much |—–| hope left.
@ huh — Heck yeah! Love Bill Maher. He had some hilarious jokes about the Michael Jackson thing, I have to post the video some time.
agreed. also, such excessive coverage (and things like this hair business) doesn’t honor *anyone’s* memory; spectacles are not respectable memorials. ugh.
Exactly my thoughts, except worded better!
Hair into diamonds? *facepalm*
Nail. Head. Hit.
Well done. It’s all so true.
@ A — Damn skippy!
Thank you.
I thought the whole country had turned into hypocritical dumbasses…at least there’s still hope.
Damn, one day he’s a pedophile, rapist, freak and then he dies and *POOF*
Now he’sthe king of Pop and a loss to the black community….I think he was prejudice against blacks too, i mean he turned himself into a white person, WTF?
I don’t feel so bad now
