What Was McCain Thinking?

Self-proclaimed moose hunter, Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin is John McCain’s choice as Vice President. Instead of picking a more well-known candidate (Mitt Romney anyone?), McCain seems to have opted for the shock value of an relatively unknown female name. His thought process probably went something like this: Surely if there’s a woman on the ticket, I must be addressing women’s issues! Hey, all you independent female voters and disgruntled Hillary Clinton supporters, look over here! Sarah Palin is a woman.
If McCain thinks we’ll fall for this, he is more out-of-touch with reality than I thought. First of all, with or without Palin, McCain is no friend to women. He doesn’t even have a “Women’s Issues” page on his campaign site. Furthermore, while some think Biden makes sexist jokes, McCain is notorious for his anti-women jokes (like this one about a victim of rape). So why add a woman to the ticket, you might ask, if he doesn’t care about women’s issues?
There’s one simple answer: She is a neo-conservative politician who supports the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, expanding oil drilling in Alaska, among other things. Oh yeah, and she’s hot. Did I mention that yet? McCain likes to surround himself with pretty women (like heiress wife Cindy). There’s no problem with that, on a fundamental level. However, when that starts to dictate your political decisions…
The real kicker is, McCain has been running a campaign based solely on Obama’s percieved “lack of experience.” This is completely hypocritical when you look at Palin’s political experience. The woman was the mayor of a town of 9,000 (her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska, I might add). She then became Lieutenant Governor of Alaska by a margin of less than 2,000 votes. She has only been Governor for 21 months. Foreign Policy Experience: None. Washington Political Experience: None. Moose Hunting Experience: Plenty.
I try to be a reasonable, open-minded person. However, since I heard the news about Palin, I have become positively livid. No matter what you say about Obama or Biden, neither of them has sexist policies. They are both progressive, they are pro-choice and have political experience at the regional and national level. McCain, however, is a politician who is not only similar to our current failure of a President, George Bush, but he has just shown that he cannot make capable decisions. His biggest mistake? He failed to remember one crucial piece of information: just because you’re a woman, doesn’t mean you care about women’s rights. Governor Sarah Palin does not care about women’s rights. She doesn’t care that much about the environment and endangered species either. I would never vote for someone with the policies she represents, no matter their gender, race, or how attractive they look in glasses.

What do I have to say about Sarah Palin?
BLEUARGH!!! Sorry, did I vomit on your page? My apologies.
Most of what I feel you’ve got linked to up there (Wink* and thanks!), but this deserves repeating: If I hear one more person say they know nothing about Palin’s politics but thinks she’s hot, I will explode. And I will take everyone out around me. I must have seen five or six featured posts today on WordPress with guys talking about how hawt she is. Good to see sexism is still well and alive!
Oh, and also… did you see the Yahoo News this morning? Apparently this was a “historic” choice on the part of McCain. As if Barack becoming the first African American presidential candidate or Hillary’s hard-fought campaign weren’t good enough… *more eye rolling*
@ dollyann – Yeah, historic choice my ass. First female vice presidential candidate …on a GOP ballot. Geraldine Ferraro was the FIRST female vice presidential candidate on ANY ballot. Palin isn’t historic so much as pathetic. She’s the female Dan Quayle (have you seen her speak? She’s not eloquent or interesting in the slightest).
What burns me the most is when people say, “Oh she is there to fill Hillary’s shoes”….um HELL NO!!!! Palin would be lucky if she had a tenth of the intelligence, charisma, and perseverance that Hillary Clinton possesses. There is no comparison.
Thanks for the comment :-)
Amen, sister. The Republicans figure that people will spend so much time talking about her gender and her personal life that they’ll forget that her politics put her somewhere to the right of Pat Buchanan (who she once supported as President). But you can’t really call her a token, because tokens don’t get to be one infarct away from having their finger on the nuclear trigger!
